Description:The sole is a ground loving fish which is able to adjust to its colour to match its surroundings. Here we can see the skin in close up with about nine scales visible. Actually, only the fine spines of the ends of the scales are visible, the rest of the shape is just hinted at. The scales are covered in a spotted skin on a gold background. The spots are cells holding different colour dyes which can be consciously enlarged or shrunk so that the overall blend of the different dyes matches the background colour and patterning. |
