Description:These purple flowers were from a small bush invading a garden in Milton. The five pointed petals surround a column made by the bright yellow anthers, with the style projecting out beyond. Solanum species, which include the nightshades and the potato are predominantly self fertilising. If you look closely at the tips of the anthers you can see that the tips have two pores through which the pollen is released onto the female stigma. This contrasts with many other anthers which burst open to release the pollen. |
