Description:

The commission was for a calligraphy rendering of Hillel's saying. The last phrase 'if not now when' introduced the element of time and resulted in this paradox above. The phrase is repeated in Hebrew in gold leaf anticlockwise around the face. The lettering, numbers and times of day or month all have their special significances in Hebrew culture which this naive gentile interpretation alludes to but cannot do fully justice!
