Description:Walk along a sandy beach in Dorset, Norfolk or Wales and notice the white crescents of sand left by the receding tide. These are particulary rich in the remains of microscopic algae and animals. Above, the 'snail' shell on the left is the shell of a single celled animal, a Foraminiferan. immediately to the right of it is part of a sea mat - the husk of a colony of small organisms. Next to that is a different foraminiferan. At the bottom, the branching skeleton is that of an alga (a marine plant). |
